Making a Lemon Battery

This term our class project is Electricity.
A battery is made of two different metals and a conducting liquid or paste. There are many natural liquids which are safe to use. One of them is citric acid which you find in different fruit and vegetables.
We wanted to find out whether we could make electricity from a lemon.
Firstly we stuck a copper coin and a zinc nail into a lemon. We made sure they did not touch.
We had a voltmeter to test if our lemon battery cell was producing any voltage. It showed 000 on the unconnected meter.
When we connected it to the nail and the copper coin in the lemon it went to 0.945 or more.
This showed us that electricity was flowing in our lemon batteries!
Next we connected 4 lemons up with wires and crocodile clips to try to light a small bulb but we couldn't create enough power to light the bulb. Maybe our lemons were too small or not juicy and sharp enough. Next time we'll try a grapefruit!

  1. That is the thing about science - it doesn't always work, is full if surprises and leads to new discoveries! You look like very budding scientists here - well done!

  2. What fun, didn't know that you could do that with lemons!

  3. Making circuits, testing and finding conductors is great fun! All sorts of strange objects can be used to make electricity.
    Enjoy finding out.
