Create a Character Challenge

We were set a challenge to design
and make a character mask.
By setting up a simple circuit or
a parallel circuit
the nose or eyes
of the mask had to light up
and switch on and off.
All challenge groups had a
successful outcome, Well done!
Any ideas for character names?

Views from a playground...one

Around the playground we have noticed that the whitebeam trees seem to have loads more berries on them this year.
Have other parts of Scotland noticed the same?

...views from a playground two

We wanted to find out more about the link between compass points and angles.
In the playground we gave each other instructions using direction words and angles e.g turn 90 degrees clockwise or turn 270 degrees anti clockwise.

Not everyone had noticed the 8 point compass painted in the front playground before!

We recorded which direction we were facing to start off with and when we had finished .We also recorded what we were looking at e.g.
facing SE and turning 45 degrees clockwise I face S to the school building.

facing SE and turning 45 degrees anticlockwise I look E across the Peedie Sea over to the Power Station and St Magnus Cathedral.

"If I face SE then turn 360 degrees I'll be facing my house!" (P4 pupil)

Electric hairdo!

I don't think static electricity is doing much for our hairstyles!

More balloon tricks...

Can you explain the science behind what is happening in these pictures?

Bobbing Balloons!

When electricity forms on the
surface of an object or material
It is called static electricity.

In static electricity we use the
word positive charge and
negative charge for the build-up
of electricity on the surface.

Positive charges attract negative
charges. After rubbing a balloon
against a jumper it will appear
to stick.This is static electricity.
It also works with the hairs on your
arm or your head. The hairs are
attracted to the charge on the balloon
so they reach out towards it.

Grass

Green grass will always be
Rolling round the wind when it's cut
And lovely and fresh for the cows
Sometimes it is swaying in the wind
Sometimes it is still.

Magic Magnets!

Do you think the
magnetic force will
flow through
the wooden table?

I wonder if I can make this train move
using a magnet?

Fun with Magnetism!

Magnetism is an invisible force that
attracts iron and steel .
Magnets have some extraordinary properties.
When two magnets are put end to end and they
snap together they ATTRACT.
When they push apart they REPEL.

Blog update for parents...

Term 1 is disappearing rapidly. All children in class 4/5 are really giving of their best, achieving and hopefully feeling good about themselves and their progress.

There has been a problem on the blog site which has stopped parental comment appearing. This has now been sorted.
There will also shortly be a means of just ticking that you have looked at the blog as an alternative to leaving a comment.

Wow! Look at it go!

What happened

What this tells us

Our solar panel storing energy!

What we wanted to find out
Could we create electricity from the sun , wind and water using our renewable energy machines ?
We predicted that
We thought we could depending on the weather.
What we did
We tried the solar panel and the wind turbine on
1. a sunny day and a cloudy day
2. a windy day and calm day

Making a Lemon Battery

This term our class project is Electricity.
A battery is made of two different metals and a conducting liquid or paste. There are many natural liquids which are safe to use. One of them is citric acid which you find in different fruit and vegetables.
We wanted to find out whether we could make electricity from a lemon.
Firstly we stuck a copper coin and a zinc nail into a lemon. We made sure they did not touch.
We had a voltmeter to test if our lemon battery cell was producing any voltage. It showed 000 on the unconnected meter.
When we connected it to the nail and the copper coin in the lemon it went to 0.945 or more.
This showed us that electricity was flowing in our lemon batteries!
Next we connected 4 lemons up with wires and crocodile clips to try to light a small bulb but we couldn't create enough power to light the bulb. Maybe our lemons were too small or not juicy and sharp enough. Next time we'll try a grapefruit!
